Book Review: Book of a Thousand Days

Book of a Thousand Days, Shannon Hale

I just finished this yesterday. Shannon Hale is the author who wrote Austenland. This was completely different than that book, but also really good. And extremely interesting.

Lady Saren and Dashti, her maid, are shut in a tower for 7 years by her horrible father. He is angry because she won't marry the man he wants her to. (this is all based on a kind of made up world ... hundreds of years ago in a "Mongolia" type of place .... with Khans and "gentry") Lady Saren's two suitors begin to visit outside the tower, one is welcome, the other is not. Soon food runs low and the girls begin to lose hope. Dashti has a hard time feeding them, and Lady Saren is beyond lifelessness .... Dashti needs to find a way out.

This book is VERY interesting. It is in the form of a journal that Dashti keeps .... there are no chapters, only days in the life of this lady's maid. I really liked it. Dashti is a "mucker" ... a group of people that are considered lower than most .... goat herding people. So she doesn't think she's worthy to do anything great. In the end, of course, she realizes that maybe she's worth more than she, and even others, thought.

This book has romance, danger, mystery, social intricacies, and a whole different world woven into it .... It was good.
